Why Y2K keeps coming back

The Y2K aesthetic borrows from roughly 1998 to 2006: pop stars, flip phones, frosted lip gloss, early internet optimism. For a generation that grew up with those photos in family albums, it feels nostalgic and fun at the same time. It is also forgiving; it is supposed to look a bit extra.

Getting it right comes down to three things: the outfit, the props and the way the photo is lit. Nail two of the three and people will get it.

• Velour or nylon tracksuit in pink, baby blue or butter yellow.

• Wired earphones and a chunky music player.

• Inflatable furniture, beaded curtains or a lava lamp.

Poses and framing

Y2K photos are playful, not serious. Think peace signs, blowing a kiss, over-the-shoulder looks, a hand on the hip, sitting cross-legged on the floor, or a friend squeezing into the frame. Camera angles are a bit chaotic: slightly from above, a little tilted, a little too close. Mirror selfies with the flash going off are practically required.

Lighting and edits

• Warm it up with a pink or peach tint, or cool it down with a blue cast.
• Boost saturation on pinks and blues, keep skin natural.
• Add soft glow or bloom to highlights.
• Optional: an orange date stamp in the corner.

Y2K photo mistakes to avoid

• Wearing every trend at once. One or two statement pieces read as Y2K; ten read as a costume.
• Soft, perfect phone lighting. Y2K wants flash and a little overexposure.
• Muted colors. The era was glossy and bright, so let the pinks and blues pop.
• Serious model poses. Playful beats polished here.
• Obvious modern details in frame, like the latest phone in your hand.
