Mirror selfie poses: 15 ideas that don't look stiff, plus where to look
By Liam Walker, Social media and creator strategy · Updated · 6 min read
the short version
A good mirror selfie starts with a clean mirror and a background with one interesting detail, then a phone held at chest height so your body isn't distorted. Pick a pose with a little movement, like a weight shift, a hand in your hair or a look away from the screen, and decide on purpose between flash for a glossy night look and soft daylight for a clean one.

Set up the mirror first
Most bad mirror selfies are bad before you pose. Two minutes of setup fixes more than any filter:
- Wipe the mirror. Smudges catch the flash and blur the whole photo.
- Clear the background. Move the laundry pile, close the wardrobe, hide cables.
- Find one interesting thing for the frame: a plant, a lamp, a doorway, a textured wall.
- Check the light. A window beside you is best; a ceiling light right above you is worst.
- Clean the camera lens on the back of your phone too. It is usually the real reason photos look hazy.
Where are the best places for a mirror selfie?
The mirror you use sets the mood as much as the outfit. Some spots almost guarantee an interesting photo:
- An elevator with steel walls, for a sleek, cold, editorial feel.
- A shop fitting room, with the curtain half open and bags on the floor.
- A gym mirror, mid-workout, towel over one shoulder.
- A hotel or restaurant bathroom with good tiles and warm lighting.
- A full-length mirror leaned against a wall at home, shot slightly from below.
- A car side mirror or a shop window at night, for a reflection with city lights.
If you love the getting-dressed angle, our fit check video guide shows how to turn outfit mirror shots into a short clip.

Make it with my photoHow should you hold your phone in a mirror selfie?
Phone position decides your proportions. Small changes make a big difference to how long your legs and how natural your face look.
- Chest height is the safe default for full-body shots: no stretched head, no shrunken legs.
- Hold it slightly lower and tilt up a little to make legs look longer.
- Hold it to the side of your face instead of in front of it when you want your face in the shot.
- Cover your face with the phone on purpose when the outfit is the point.
- Use the 1x lens. The wide lens bends straight lines and makes whatever is closest to the mirror look bigger.
What are the best mirror selfie poses?
Stiff mirror selfies come from standing square to the mirror with both arms down. These 15 poses give your body something to do:
- The weight shift: weight on one leg, pop the other knee.
- The over-the-shoulder: turn your shoulders away and look back at the screen.
- The hair touch: run your free hand through your hair.
- The collar fix: adjust a collar, a strap or an earring.
- The shoe check: look down at your shoes as if caught mid-check.
- The look-away: eyes off to the side, toward a window or a door.
- The sit-down: sit on a bench, a bed edge or a bathtub rim.
- The prop hand: hold a bag, keys or an iced coffee.
- The pocket lean: one hand in a pocket, shoulder against the door frame.
- The side profile: turn fully sideways to show the outfit's silhouette.
- The step: catch yourself mid-step toward the mirror.
- The crouch: low squat for wide trousers or a big coat.
- The phone-over-face: hide your face with the phone so the outfit is the point.
- The back view: turn around and look at the mirror over your shoulder.
- The laugh: say something to yourself and shoot while you laugh.
Where should you look in a mirror selfie?
There are three places to look, and each gives a different photo:
- At the phone screen: the classic. You look at yourself, so the photo reads as candid and a little casual.
- At your reflection's eyes in the mirror: the photo looks straight at the viewer, which feels more confident and more like a portrait.
- Away from both: down at your shoes, out a window or at the door. This hides camera shyness and makes the outfit the subject.
Flash or no flash
Flash in a mirror is a choice, not a mistake. Each version has its own look:
- Flash on: glossy, bright and a little chaotic, with a starburst where the flash hits the mirror. Great at night and for party outfits.
- Flash off near a window: soft, flattering and clean. Best for everyday outfits and skin.
- Flash off at night with warm lamps: moody and cozy, but hold very still or brace your elbow.
